"My brave soldiers are defending my city.  My trump card has been trumped.  So the duty now falls to me.  Now -- step forward if you desire a royal beating." - Sonic the Hedgehog issue 284

Because King Acorn is seriously awesome in the new Archie Sonic continuity and could use some fan art...NOW.  I didn't know much about the old comic continuity King Acorn, but the new one is really good. :XD:  I find him to be very interesting now.  And there's hardly any fanart of him at all! :stare:  NO JUSTICE!!!

Since he first appeared in issue 252 of the comics after the Genesis Wave, I was intrigued by him.  Even Sonic was shocked by the difference compared to his original King Max counterpart.  He's friendly, entirely willing to help the heroes and give them the support they need for their missions, and his meaningful relationship with Sally as a father has been restored to how it was in the SatAM cartoon.  In recent issues of the main series and Sonic Universe, it seems they've been rounding out his character more, too.  An oddly grim and serious side to him has been shown, which made me pretty curious about his history with G.U.N and Commander Tower.  Once StH #284 revealed his...interesting display of abilities and weaponry, THAT took the cake (as if the rest of the issue wasn't a wild ride).  He's officially an awesome side character. :la:  To be honest, I'd kinda like to see him have a solo story.  Just a little. >u>

Since then, I've been into drawing him lately.  I started drawing out some character studies, but then I got into working on this.  I thought it was really cool to find out that he had energy bracelets to use as weapons like Sally.  Now it might sort of explain where Sally herself got usage of those from.  Hmmm.  So this idea hit me and I got to work on it.  I wanted to do something displaying his energy-armor, while giving it a dramatic look which shows that he means business.  A dark background, dark/light contrast shading, glowing effects, and a serious expression on King Acorn's face.  The placement is not exactly how I envisioned it, plus it still seems like it's kind of plain, but I guess it turned out all right.

I'm still laughing over the fact that he's named Nigel now. :XD:  It's hilarious how people were making jokes and headcanons a year ago that King Acorn was named that, then Archie goes and actually makes it canon.  I know nothing about The Wild Thornberrys cartoon except from what little I've seen from people talking about it.  I was pretty confused by the jokes and references about the name at first, but it makes sense to me now.  Especially since, from what I've heard, both Nigel Thornberry and the King in SatAM were voiced by Tim Curry.  Seems pretty undeniable that it's a reference.  It got me caught up in the jokes a bit since people have been freaking out about it, haha.  Maybe it's not just a SMASHING coincidence after all! *smacked*  Okay, sorry; I'm done.  I think. xD
